STAYING ON TRACK WITH YOUR FITNESS GOALS
One of the common questions I get asked is ‘How do I stay on track?’
I think it’s important to note first that staying on track is more about patiently building a solid routine rather than aiming for ‘perfect’ days.
If you miss a workout one day for example, you haven’t fallen ‘off track’.
You’re not supposed to feel motivated every day. We are aiming to create a routine and daily rituals so you don’t rely on feeling motivated.
6 Tips for staying on track.
1. Schedule yourself into your week. Put in your calendar the days and times you will train, when you take your breaks to have your meals, when you will aim to get to bed, and build your days / week around this. Have a back plan too if you need one.
2. Learn to say ‘no’ … or at the very least … ‘yes but I can do it on _____ day.’ Start to view your appointments with yourself as a priority, and not something you reschedule or give up because someone needs something right now. Most things can wait.
3. Get rid of the ‘all or nothing’ mindset. You haven’t immediately ‘fallen off track’ if you missed one workout or didn’t hit your nutrition goals on one day. This isn’t falling off track if you nailed the rest of the week or day. Think of these moments as the exception not the rule.
4. Get some support! Accountability is a wonderful tool. Also having a coach to help you trouble shoot on sticking points, and help you with strategy when something isn’t working is helpful.
5. Have a goal. This doesn’t need to be a scale goal or a comp goal. It can be a strength goal – being able to lift a certain weight or do a pull up. It can be to feel better – noticing you’ve slept better because you have a good sleep routine, or noticing your digestion or energy levels are better because you have been focusing on your nutrition.
6. Remind yourself of the alternative. Prior to starting you were probably frustrated with where you were and WANTING to have a better training and nutrition routine, or a better lifestyle. Remember how this felt.
Too often we become hyperfocused on results, rather than the things that are going to move us in the direction of our goals and keep us there.
We focus very heavily on this within our team. Afterall, you can have the best nutrition and training plan written for you, but if you cant follow it, develop the habits and mindset tools to stick with it long term, then you are just spinning your wheels.
