Little secret to share with you all ..
Are you contemplating a bit of a lifestyle change? Thinking about maybe including a little exercise or eating a little better?
Secret ???????? this doesn’t mean you have to train and eat like a body builder / fitness model. Yup – there, I said it. It can be a little daunting to whizz through your news feed and see all the athletes who are grinding away in the gym and peppering their #fitfood pics everywhere. The reality is – these people are training for specific competition goals. We all have different goals, priorities, and available time each day. And the reality is also – some of us do better implementing change gradually whilst others thrive on the ‘go hard or go home’ principle. What matters is that you do what works for you and is going to support lasting change.
My advice –
☝???? Definitely find time to move every day. This doesn’t need to be a 2-hour session dedicated to growing some hulk like shoulder caps (unless of course you WANT hulk like shoulder caps). It can be a few days of weights for the week and some walks/runs on other days. Something is better than nothing – if you have been doing nothing. This will get you some results and have a positive impact on your health. There are so many free workout videos on YouTube that don’t involve having to grunt it out on the weight room floor 6 days a week that you can try. Visit my You Tube channel for some great workouts you can do in the gym, at home, or at a park.

☝???? Definitely make healthier food choices – be realistic about this… If you’re ploughing through 2 packs of Tim tams, and shovelling shit into your mouth more often than not… you’ll need to dial this in a little … but you also don’t need to be restricting yourself to a staple diet of chicken and broccoli to get results. Basically, if you’re eating more than you’re burning off you’re not going to get results. If you’re consistently making poor nutrition choices – you’re not going to get results.
☝???? If you need some help – get a coach or trainer – honestly – it can be a minefield out there with all of the information swimming around on your news feed – some good info and some is just complete bullshit. But investing in a GOOD, qualified, experienced trainer who can sit down with you and work out what your goals are, taking into consideration your personal circumstances is a smart idea. They should also be someone who invests in educating their clients to help them understand nutrition and training, be able to decipher between the legitimate information and the bullshit, and set them up with the knowledge they need to continue with healthy lifestyle choices, and to continue getting results. They should also be someone who is going to be real with you about what you need to be doing.
Obviously, the science behind all of this is a little more complex than eat well and move daily. But you don’t need to understand all of this in depth to get started or to live a healthier lifestyle. You can learn as you go. It is a great idea to invest some time into learning about your body, movement and nutrition, but the important thing is that you get started.
Looking at what your favourite bodybuilder or fitness model is doing can be great for motivation, new training ideas, ideas for nutrition, and they share some amazing tips, mindset tools and some of them are incredibly inspiring. But just keep in mind that many of them are training for a sport specific goal and they have chosen to make this a priority, and have made the choice to dedicate their time to achieving a specific sporting goal. Example – if you wanted to take up swimming, would you immediately adopt the training regime of an Olympic swimmer? No…..unless, ofcourse, you wanted to become an Olympic Swimmer. Having a healthy lifestyle and making some lifestyle changes does not necessarily translate to you having to dedicate your entire existence to pumping iron and steaming broccoli.
With Australia being a country with one of the highest Obesity rates – we definitely need to be doing something different, but we don’t need to be a nation of #fitspo models and gym junkies in order to achieve a better level of health.
Take home messages;
- You do need to find time to move every day, including some resistance training and some cardio for better health.
- You do need to eat lean meats and greens – and cut back on the junk, for better health
- Work out what works for you when implementing change – gradually introducing new habits and mastering those first, or jumping all in and doing a lifestyle overhaul. We are all different and what matters is the approach that works for you.
- Many of us are juggling priorities, find the right fit for you.
